WYNIT is a leading national distributor of computer peripherals and consumer electronics, with specialties in digital imaging, outdoor electronics, photo identification/security products and video editing equipment and software. WYNIT's corporate headquarters is located in East Syracuse, NY and with its new warehouses in California and Memphis are providing coast to coast coverage. Wynit sells over 5,000 products from more than 100 of the most well known companies in these industries. The company’s products are sold for resale to a broad range of customers, from the nation’s largest retailers to the smallest specialty stores. WYNIT sells only to resellers
Distribution Manager Steve Schmitt and IT Manager Shawn Kelly wanted to develop a secure wireless local area network (WLAN) with reliable access for workforce with over 100,000 square feet of warehouse space and 100 pieces of RF equipment. The objective, design and install system with an accelerated startup of less that 30 days from award of contract.
The project specifications for WYNIT's wireless LAN deployment included segmentation for future expansion, providing 1 Cisco Firewall, 10 Cisco Switches, 21 Zebra 105 Direct Thermal Printers, and 26 Okidata Laser Printers. The wireless LAN had to incorporate strong security and meet the needs of future expansion. Adding to the challenge, the project timeline was very short, with only several weeks available for system delivery, so not only was this a rapid turnaround at a large site, but the project required installation of all of the supporting equipment for the wireless LAN.
The Wireless Switch System from Cisco met all of WYNIT's criteria:
The Cisco 1230 Wireless Access Ports were the specific components that were selected from Cisco's Wireless Switch System family of products.
The Cisco a wireless infrastructure tightly integrated into a wired-enterprise network core and delivered advanced wireless services and connectivity without compromising network security. It provided an architecture that is scalable to grow as the needs of WYNIT's corporate growth expands. The Wireless 11 Mbps IEEE 802.11b Access Ports supports all certified devices. Along with its enhanced functionality and mobility management, the advanced technology in the Wireless Switch System centralizes control and management functions for the wireless network.
Cisco Access Ports were connected through built-up power distribution devices back to the Wireless Switch System. The security policies in the wireless switches ensured that the only access was to designated devices. This prevented local intruders from being able to go directly through the network and attack connected users. It also limited use of the wireless LAN as a local communication medium for only local users.
With the right choice of a wireless LAN infrastructure, like the one at WYNIT's, the system works well even in the most demanding of environments. With over 50 simultaneous users any given time using the Wireless infrastructure for data access this project proved system effectiveness through thoroughly engineered solutions. Workers filled orders wirelessly from the work floor, while other users moved inventory though wireless access. Security policies enabled by the wireless protected operation’s network.
